Support of the Weinstrup Amendment, Continued Support for VA

On July 27, 2017, the Academy sent to Representative Brad Weinstrup, Chairman, House Committee on Veterans Affairs, Subcommittee on Health, a letter in support of his Amendment HR 1058, known as the VA Provider Equity Act. The bill provides provision to raise salaries of podiatrists to be equivalent with that of other physicians. The amendment is important for many reasons–not the least of which is that it will result in our veterans, who have served this country, to receive high quality services which may be avoided when salaries are too low.

On May 31, 2016, APWH submitted a letter in support of Bill S. 2175. At that time it had passed through the vote in the House and was then waiting for the Senate vote where it failed by a very small margin. Over the past year, there has been very positive changes and we hope to see the passage of this legislation. In early March of 2016 the American Orthopedic Society (AAOS) drafted a letter not supporting S. 2175. A letter drafted from the APWH at that time was submitted pointing out the flaws in the Orthopedic Society argument and a rationale as to why it should be adopted. It’s very pleasing to know that the AAOS has revered their original position.  They, in turn, sent a letter in support of Representative Brad Weintraub’s Amendment, currently known as HR 1050.
